Erica Sonnenburg received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences at the University of California, San Diego in 2000. After her Ph.D., she continued studying cellular signaling at the Salk Institute. Erica applied her background in how mammalian cells receive and transmit signals to study how bacterial cells in our digestive tract “sense” available nutrients and adjust to changes in diet in the lab of Jeffrey Gordon at Washington University in Saint Louis. She has published her ground-breaking scientific findings related to the microbiota in prestigious journals such as The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Cell. She is currently a senior research scientist at the Stanford University School of Medicine in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology where she studies the role of diet on the human intestinal microbiota.
