Rupert Russell

Rupert Russell is a writer and director. His first feature documentary, Freedom for the Wolf, was nominated for the Cinema for Peace Most Valuable Documentary of the Year, won the Audience Award at the Slamdance Film Festival and the Best Political Film Prize at the Protobello Film Festival, and screened at 40 film festivals worldwide, including IDFA and Sheffield Doc/Fest. Executive produced by BBC Storyville founder Nick Fraser, it tells story of the global crisis of democracy from the Umbrella Revolution in Hong Kong to the failure of the Arab Spring in Tunisia to the rise of Donald Trump in America. He is currently working on his next feature documentary on the commodities markets, commissioned by ARTE, ARD, and SVT.

Rupert has a Double-Starred First in the Social and Political Sciences from Jesus College, Cambridge, and a PhD from Harvard University in Sociology, where he was National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. After graduating, he returned to the film industry, which he worked in first as a small child. He has kept his academic eye for detail as well as his passion for big ideas with global impacts. He has filmed in Iraq, Somalia, Venezuela, Eastern Ukraine, Tunisia, Kuwait, India, Kenya, Greece, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, and the United States. He has also done commercial work for the FT, Auriens, CNN, and the UK Government.
