Gary Philips has published various novels, graphic novels, short stories and edited or co-edited several anthologies including the Cocaine Chronicles, the bestselling Orange County Noir and the Anthony-winning The Obama Inheritance. Violent Spring his debut novel twenty some years ago was set in the aftermath of the ’92 civil unrest and was named one of the essential crime novels of Los Angeles; he co-wrote the prose adaptation of the classic Batman vs. Joker graphic novel The Killing Joke; and was a story editor on “Snowfall,” an FX cable show about crack and the CIA in 1980s South Central where he grew up, and was a community organizer around issues of police accountability in the days of infamous police chief Daryl Gates and the batteram. His most recent novel is Matthew Henson and the Ice Temple of Harlem.
