Lesley Younge

Lesley Younge is a multi-genre writer, poet, and middle school educator from Silver Spring, Maryland. She is the author of several books for young people including Nearer My Freedom, a verse novel remix of Olaudah Equiano’s autobiography, which has received multiple starred reviews and was a YALSA Finalist for Excellence in Nonfiction as well as a winner of the Children’s Africana Book Award; and A-Train Allen, her first picture book. Her most recent books, Playbook for Justice and Soulforce, are about the nonviolent life of Reverend James Lawson Jr. who was her childhood pastor. Lesley is a fellow of Storyknife, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Hurston/Wright Foundation, and Anaphora Literary Arts. Her work has appeared in Poetry, Callaloo, and others.

Originally from Los Angeles, California, Lesley attended New York University and Bank Street College of Education, where she discovered a passion for supporting young people’s learning.
