Keith Payne, Ph.D. is a professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of North Carolina. His lab studies how inequality shapes the human mind. They ask: Why do poor people take more risks than richer people? Why does feeling poor sometimes have more immediate effects than actually being poor? Why do people sometimes act in prejudiced ways toward low status groups even when they intend to be fair? We use the methods of experimental psychology to understand the cognitive and emotional mechanisms behind these pressing social questions.
